Aasmi Counselling -
                            Frequently Asked Questions

1. How do I know if counselling is right for me?

Counselling is not only for people facing severe difficulties. If you are feeling emotionally overwhelmed, stuck, confused, stressed, struggling in relationships, or simply finding it difficult to cope with life's challenges, counselling can help. You do not need to have everything figured out before reaching out.

3. What if I feel nervous or don't know where to start?

That's completely okay. Many people feel nervous before their first session. You don't need the "right words" or a clear explanation of everything you're feeling. We can begin wherever you are and work together from there.

5. Can counselling help if I am unsure about what I am
feeling?

Yes. Sometimes people seek counselling not because they have answers, but because they feel confused, overwhelmed, or unable to understand what they are experiencing. Counselling can help bring clarity to these experiences.

Getting Started

2. What happens in the first counselling session?

The first session is an opportunity for us to get to know each other. We will discuss what brings you to counselling, understand your concerns, and explore your goals. There is no pressure to share everything at once. You are welcome to take your time and share at a pace that feels comfortable to you.

4. Do I need to be diagnosed with a mental health condition

No. Counselling is not only for people with a diagnosis. Many individuals seek support for stress, relationship concerns, emotional difficulties, life transitions, personal growth, or simply to understand themselves better.

A counselling session generally lasts around 45 to 60 minutes, depending on the nature of the concern and the therapeutic process.

9. Will counselling make me dependent on therapy?

No. The aim of counselling is to help you better understand yourself, develop healthy coping strategies, strengthen your emotional resilience, and become more confident in handling life's challenges independently.

11. Is counselling only about discussing problems?

No. Counselling is also about understanding yourself, building emotional resilience, improving relationships, developing coping skills, strengthening self-awareness, and supporting personal growth.

8. How many sessions will I need?

There is no fixed number of sessions. Some concerns may require only a few sessions, while others may benefit from longer-term support. Together, we will regularly review your progress and decide what feels most helpful for you.

10. Do you provide advice or tell clients what decisions to
 make?

Counselling is not about telling you what to do. Instead, it is a collaborative process that helps you explore your thoughts, emotions, values, and options so that you can make informed decisions that feel right for you.

12. Will counselling provide immediate solutions?

Counselling is a process rather than a quick fix. While some people experience relief early on, meaningful and lasting change often develops gradually through reflection, learning, and consistent effort.

Confidentiality and Safety

13. Are counselling sessions confidential?

Yes. Confidentiality is an important principle of counselling. What you share during sessions remains private. However, confidentiality may need to be broken if there is a serious risk of harm to yourself or others, or if disclosure is required by law.

15. Can I stop counselling whenever I want?

Yes. Participation in counselling is voluntary. However, if you are considering ending counselling, it is often helpful to discuss your decision during a session so that the process can be concluded thoughtfully and appropriately.

14. Will I be judged for my thoughts, feelings, or past
experiences?

Counselling provides a non-judgmental and respectful space. The goal is not to judge, blame, or criticize, but to understand your experiences and support your growth.
